Understanding the Superhero Genre

Heading off to a movie is a great way to spend some time with friends or family, dinner and a movie is a traditional date night for most couples.  Not too long ago action movies or horror flicks would only bring in the most adventurous movie goers to the theater.  Now you can see films in all kinds of different genres and the special effects are so good that science fiction, fantasy and superhero themed movies have become the mainstay.  Some of the biggest blockbusters of the summer have been superhero movies.  But before you head off to see another superhero movie make sure you understand the genre, here’s how you can do that.

  1. Check out the Comics First

Most of the superhero films started out as a comic book first and have the framework already established in print.  If you haven’t read the comics you may not get some of the content that the filmmakers put into the movie.  If you have a basic understanding of the characters and their origin story then you will enjoy the movie a lot more.

  1. Don’t Expect it to be Exactly Like the Comics

A superhero movie is never going to be exactly like its comic book counterpart just as movies are never exactly like the books they are based on so don’t expect them to be.  Many of these comics were created decades ago and the writers and directors will incorporate what is happening in the modern world so that they can be relevant to today’s audiences.  Superman can still fly but he can also use a cell phone, this makes the characters more engaging.

  1. The Good Guy vs the Bad Guy

At the heart of a superhero film is the good guy versus the bad guy theme, superheroes fight villains and protect the innocent within their roles.  A superhero movie isn’t just about explosions and cool special effects although there are a fair amount of those.  The theme in the movie can deal with anything from racism such as in the X-Men movies to fighting authoritarianism and violence.  Don’t get so caught up in the explosions and special effects that you miss the lessons that these movies are there to teach you.

Superhero movies are a fun way to kill a couple of hours at the theater, you will be entertained and there will be lots of cool things to grab your attention.  But don’t forget the origins of these movies and what they can teach you.  Even if you are not a comic book fan you can still enjoy a good action flick.
